Huw Morgan
Trumpet
Winner of the Prague Spring, Ellsworth Smith, Girolamo Fantini, Only Brass and Lieksa international trumpet competitions, Huw Morgan is principal trumpet of the Basel Symphony Orchestra and professor of trumpet at the Lucerne University of Arts.
Recent solo highlights include concerto appearances with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava, Helsinki Philharmonic, Northern Sinfonia, and Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. A passionate exponent of contemporary music, Huw has premiered works by Karl Jenkins, David Philip Hefti, and Jonathan Harvey.
The first two albums in his solo series for Naxos, The Art of the Modern Trumpet, have garnered international acclaim, described variously as a “sensational debut”, “exquisitely interpreted”, and with a “pure tone, utter control, and a sense of easy mastery”.
Alongside his solo activities, Huw appears regularly as guest principal with many leading ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields. A sought-after clinician, he has presented masterclasses throughout Europe, North America, and Asia.
Born in South Wales, Huw studied at Chetham’s School of Music, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste.
